Physical Education INTENT statement

PE Curriculum Intent Statement – Little Horsted CE Primary School

At Little Horsted CE Primary School, our Physical Education curriculum is rooted in the values of kindness, respect, aspiration, community, and resilience. We believe that every child deserves the opportunity to thrive physically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually through engaging and inclusive physical activity.

We aim to nurture a love of movement and sport by creating a safe, supportive, and inspiring environment where children feel encouraged to try new things, challenge themselves, and celebrate each other’s successes. Through PE, children learn to care for their physical health, build confidence, and develop a positive mindset that helps them persevere and grow.

Our curriculum is designed to help children:

  • Respect themselves and others, learning how to use equipment safely and responsibly.
  • Aspire to achieve personal goals, using creativity and determination in a wide range of physical activities.
  • Build resilience, understanding that effort and persistence are key to improvement.
  • Work together as a community, showing fairness, honesty, and good sportsmanship whether playing individually, in teams, or as spectators.
  • Live healthily, with a strong understanding of how physical activity, nutrition, and mental wellbeing contribute to a balanced lifestyle.

We provide opportunities for all children to enjoy being active, regardless of ability, and encourage them to adopt healthy habits that will benefit their long-term wellbeing. In Key Stage 2, children also take part in swimming lessons to meet the National Curriculum requirement of swimming 25 metres by the end of Year 6.

Our PE curriculum works alongside PSHE and science to give children a well-rounded understanding of healthy living. We want every child to leave Little Horsted as a confident, respectful, and active citizen, ready to contribute positively to their community and lead a healthy, fulfilling life.
